Our Story

WHERE WE CAME FROM

In 2024, a group of local neurodivergent adults came together after sharing similar experiences of feeling misunderstood by local services. Many felt they had nowhere safe to turn for understanding, connection or appropriate advice.

Initially, the group wanted to push for better access to diagnosis, treatment, and support. But we also began asking a bigger question: what support do neurodivergent adults need in the community, not just from services?

With support from the local social enterprise, Sleeping Giants, we ran an online survey in early 2024.

185 neurodivergent adults from across Dumfries and Galloway took part.

People told us they wanted:

better understanding of neurodivergence

clearer & fairer routes to diagnosis

community-based support & peer connection

a real say in shaping the services that affect their lives

In response, Think Differently Dumfries and Galloway was set up as a community group in June 2024. Now, Think Differently runs as a community organisation by and for neurodivergent people living in Dumfries and Galloway.

WHY THINK DIFFERENTLY DG EXISTS

Neurodivergent adults across Dumfries and Galloway face many barriers in everyday life.

Our Survey showed that people often struggle with:

  • mental wellbeing

  • isolation and loneliness

  • work and education

  • accessing health and other services

Many people told us that daily life feels exhausting. Things like appointments, shopping, travel, managing a household, or spending time with others can take a huge amount of energy.

Sensory overload, anxiety, being misunderstood, and having to ‘mask’ needs often lead to burnout and poor mental health.

Mental wellbeing was a major concern. Almost everyone who took part in the survey said staying mentally healthy was difficult. Some people shared experiences of crisis and suicidal thoughts.

Physical health is also affected, especially when people cannot access the right care or support.

Getting help is often hard. People described:

  • long waiting times

  • unclear pathways

  • professionals not understanding neurodivergent adults

Only a small number had received an NHS diagnosis. Many people were left without recognition, reasonable adjustments, or access to benefits and support. Some paid for private diagnoses but worried these would not be accepted.

These challenges go beyond health. Many neurodivergent adults face barriers in:

  • education and employment

  • housing and welfare systems

  • community spaces and public services

This can increase isolation and make people feel excluded from their own communities.

Neurodivergent adults were clear about what would help:

  • better understanding and acceptance

  • earlier and more accessible support

  • safe, community-based spaces to connect with others

  • peer-led support, both online and in person

Think Differently DG exists to respond to this need.

We work alongside neurodivergent adults to create inclusive and neuro-affirming spaces for connection, support and learning. Our aim is to reduce isolation, improve wellbeing, and help people feel understood, included and valued.
